Final Walk of Honor bricks to be laid by spring
The last of the bricks in the university's Walk of Honor program will be in place by spring 1999.
The Walk of Honor was created during The Campaign for Mississippi State to honor those alumni and friends who contributed $500 or more during the five-year major gifts effort which began in 1992. The campaign ended in 1997 with more than $143 million in gifts, pledges, and deferred gifts.
Donors at the $500 level and above were honored with bricks inscribed with their names or the names of loved ones. The bricks make up a 170-foot walkway that stretches from the statue of the university's first president Stephen D. Lee to the flag pole on the historic Drill Field. Other bricks make up the base of the Eternal Flame Monument in front of the Allen Hall administration building, a monument that honors all contributors to Mississippi State over the years.
As part of the campus master plan, the flag pole area at the end of the Walk of Honor will be replaced with a new flag pole plaza that will incorporate the last of the bricks. The scheduled completion date for this project is spring 1999.
There will be more than 6,400 bricks in the three locations.
