The final numbers are in, and Mississippi State's Baseball Bulldogs finished among the nation's top five in attendance during the 1999 season.
In a ranking of Division I college programs compiled by Tucson-based Collegiate Baseball magazine, Mississippi State was fourth in average home attendance (4,604 on 33 dates) and fourth nationally in regular season home attendance (151,941). MSU was fifth in total home attendance, which includes attendance figures from regional tournament games.
The Mississippi State-Alabama game in Starkville drew 10,050, the 10th baseball gathering eclipsing the 10,000 mark at Dudy Noble Field. The weekend series with the Tide drew 23,394 fans, the most for a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
Seating capacity at Dudy Noble Field will climb to an estimated 7,500 this spring with the addition of more than 600 chairback seats and 18 skyboxes to the 6,700-seat grandstand. Mississippi State set the NCAA on-campus attendance record in 1989 when 14,991 watched a Mississippi State-Florida doubleheader.
The Southeastern Conference placed five teams in the top 10 and 10 among the top 27 attendance leaders in the 1999 college baseball attendance rankings.
