Charles H. Templeton Sr.

Charles H. Templeton Sr. of Starkville died Aug. 2, 2000. He was 70.
    A Starkville native, he graduated from Mississippi State in 1949.
    Templeton founded and owned several businesses, including Templeton Oldsmobile-Cadillac and The Heritage of Starkville. He was active in numerous civic organizations.
    In 1987, Templeton donated his extensive collection of historical music memorabilia—including 200 instruments, 15,000 recordings, and 22,000 pieces of sheet music—to Mississippi State. The university currently is in the process of digitizing the collection for scholarly use.

J.T. "Blondy" Black
football standout

J.T. "Blondy" Black of Jackson, a member of Mississippi State's celebrated football team of the early 1940s, died May 4, 2000. He was 79.
    Black, a Philadelphia native, was the offensive cornerstone of MSU's only undefeated football in 1940. He was a two-time All-SEC selection in 1941 and 1942 and was a UPI All-American in 1943. He also was a three-year letterman in track He went on to play professional football for the Buffalo Bisons and the Baltimore Colts.
    He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1976. Following his football career, Black was a land developer and businessman and owned an automobile dealership in Yazoo City in the 1950s.

  • Herman R. Crowder Jr. (friend)—79, Yazoo City; retired planter and World War II veteran.
  • Allan Meredith Hardy (friend)—87, Pascagoula; retired founder of Hardy & Jacobson Insurance Agency and public accountant, April 22, 2000.
