
Three Mississippi State alumni were honored at the annual Alumni Awards Banquet in February for their service to the university through local alumni chapters.
Lisa Carole Powers Campbell of Collins, Samson "Sam" Mabry Jr. of Liberty, and Mary Paige Collins McElroy of Huntsville, Ala., were Distinguished Service Awards winners for 1999.

Derma native Mabry earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture in 1939. The owner of Mabry Lumber Co., he is former president of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce and a longtime deacon at Liberty Baptist Church. Mabry is a former member of both Development Foundation and Bulldog Club boards. He also is a lifetime member of the Bulldog Club board and its Silver Division and has endowed a scholarship with the club. He is a longtime member of the Patrons of Excellence, and a contributor to MSU's creative arts center (McComas Hall).
A 1987 MSU graduate, McElroy earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Two years later, the Martinsville, Va., native moved to Huntsville where she became active in the local alumni association chapter. She served as the chapter's recruitment and scholarship chairperson for several years before becoming vice president, president, and annual fund chair. McElroy was instrumental in starting the chapter's sponsored scholarship and remains a dedicated supporter.
