Endowment to provide new business and industry scholarships

A Poplarville couple is designating $100,000 in their will to fund scholarships in the College of Business and Industry.

Roland H. Hough Sr. and his wife, Bobbye, recently established the Roland H. Hough Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund in memory of their son. Roland Hough Jr., who died in 1983 at age 29, attended Mississippi State, Hinds Community College, and the University of Texas at El Paso.

The Houghs also made a $15,000 pledge to initiate the scholarship fund.

"The College of Business and Industry is grateful for the Houghs' gift in memory of their son and the establishment of this scholarship endowment," said Harvey Lewis, dean of the College of Business and Industry. "This endowment meets a critical need by providing scholarship support to our in-state students majoring in business."

To qualify for the scholarship that covers university tuition and fees, students must be graduates of a Mississippi high school. Among other requirements, they must demonstrate scholastic achievement and leadership qualities.

Roland Hough Sr., a 1953 Mississippi State agronomy graduate, is retired from the General Electric Co. and the military. Bobbye Hough also attended Mississippi State.

The Hough Scholarship Fund is a part of the university's major gifts campaign. Commitments to The Campaign for Mississippi State, the university's first major gifts effort, have reached about $87 million. The five-year campaign, now in its third year, seeks $110 million in support of university priorities.
