Coach chosen to head first women's soccer program

William B. Findley II is Mississippi State's first-ever soccer coach. The university begins women's soccer competition within the Southeastern Conference in fall 1995.

Findley comes to Mississippi State from William Carey College in Gulfport, Miss., where he compiled a four-year record of 61-20. He headed the Lady Crusader soccer team from its inception in 1991, leading the team to the NAIA District 30 Championship and a berth in the subregional tournament in the team's initial season.

The 1993 NAIA South Region Coach of the Year guided his four William Carey teams to three national top 20 rankings, with the 1994 squad being ranked as high as fourth for much of the year.

"We are excited that we have been able to secure the services of such an outstanding individual to direct our women's soccer program, as we initiate our move into this new sports sponsorship for women in 1995," said director of athletics Larry Templeton.

The university is scheduled to begin Southeastern Conference women's softball play in spring 1996.

A two-time NAIA District 30 Coach of the Year, Findley has coached three All-Americans, as well as an NAIA All-American scholar athlete. His 1992 Lady Crusader team led the nation in scoring, while also finishing 14th in the nation in scoring defense in route to a 16th-place national ranking.

"This is certainly a great opportunity for me and my family to be able to take what we've accomplished at William Carey to the next level within the competitive Southeastern Conference," said Findley. "We've tasted some success at William Carey, and we look forward to being able to continue that tradition at Mississippi State by incorporating our prior success into building a very competitive program."

Prior to his career at William Carey, Findley served as the head men's coach for the Navy and Armed Forces soccer teams, resulting in three national championships for the Navy and participation in the Military World Cup Soccer Championships by the Armed Forces team. He also has been involved with the United States Olympic Development Program, most recently being chosen as head coach for the Mississippi girl's ODP.

A 1982 graduate of Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Findley received his master's degree in education from the University of Tennessee in 1984.
