Zacharias recently was named chair-elect of the Commission on Food, Environment, and Renewable Resources within the National Association of State Colleges and Universities. NASULGC is made up of the nation's land-grant universities and other principal state universities.
The commission dealing with food and the environment currently is overseeing the development of two major science and education white papers that are expected to help shape the issues confronting the nation in the area of integrated environmental management and in the area of interrelationships among food, nutrition, diet, and human health.
More than 10,000 students in NASULGC universities are enrolled in degree programs in environmental studies, and the field is growing, according to a survey conducted by the commission last year.
Zacharias will serve as chair-elect for one year before moving into the commission's top position, currently held by University of Maine President Frederick Hutchinson.
