Chapel of Memories gets needed repairs

Having braved time and the elements for 30 years, one of the university's most beloved landmarks is enjoying some sprucing up, and is scheduled for more.

According to John Beal, Physical Plant assistant director for utilities, the lighting on the tower has been upgraded to metal arc lights, which are much brighter than the old quartz lights.

The university also has replaced the carillon in the tower.

"The old one dated to 1964. It had the old tube type amplifiers, and the parts were no longer available to keep it playing properly," Beal said.

Another improvement will put the fountain back in operation after a hiatus caused by leaks and an outdated pumping system, said campus landscape architect Sam Hogue.

"The fountain was originally designed to have a submersible pump in the pool, and maintenance was a nightmare," Hogue said. "The system we're converting to uses a centrifugal pump, which is much more dependable."

Work on the fountain began shortly after the first of the year.

Funding for the improvements comes from donations and rental of the building for weddings.
