Furniture executive is Mississippi State's Alumnus of the Year

Hassell H. Franklin of Houston, Miss., is Mississippi State University's 1995 National Alumnus of the Year.

The president and chief executive officer of Chickasaw County-based Franklin Manufacturing Corp. received the honor at the Mississippi State Alumni Association's Annual Awards Banquet on campus in February.

After holding various positions in the furniture industry across the state, he founded what originally was known as Franklin Furniture Corp. in 1970. Today, the operation is the nation's fourth largest producer of reclining chairs.

Franklin received his bachelor's degree in industrial management in 1959. Following graduation, he served on active duty with the U.S. Army and in the Mississippi National Guard, retiring with the rank of captain.

"Hassell Franklin took from Mississippi State skills developed as a student and used them to become a leader in his field," said John V. Correro, executive director of the Alumni Association. "But most importantly to Mississippi State is Mr. Franklin's constant desire to return something to his alma mater. He is a great supporter of this institution in many ways and his devotion to our future is greatly appreciated."

Franklin is recognized nationally for his work with the furniture industry and recently served as national president of the American Furniture Manufacturers Association. He is a past director of the Home Furnishings Manufacturers Association, Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association, Furniture Manufacturers Association, and Mississippi Economic Council.

He is a member of the executive committee and board of directors of the Bank of Mississippi. He also serves on the boards of directors of Itawamba Community College Foundation, Tupelo Community Development Foundation, North Mississippi Medical Center, Mississippi State University Foundation, and the Bulldog Club.

He is a frequent speaker for Mississippi State classes and regularly participates in executive leadership programs of the College of Business and Industry.
