Godbold receives humanities honor

Dr. E. Stanly Godbold

A longtime history professor is the first at Mississippi State to be named Humanities Faculty Member of the Year.

Dr. E. Stanly Godbold received the honor in October.

A Southern history scholar, he soon will complete a book about former U.S. president Jimmy Carter.

Given under the auspices of the Mississippi Humanities Council, the award was presented in conjunction with Arts and Humanities Month in Mississippi. The council, state counterpart of the National Endowment for the Humanities, provides honoraria to schools, colleges, and universities to encourage recognition of humanities teachers.

Recognized as a Carter authority, Godbold has been invited to address the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations about crisis management in Carter's foreign policy.

He has written about a number of Southerners, including the late Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Hodding Carter Jr. of Greenville. He also has written about Virginia novelist Ellen Glasgow and will edit a special spring issue of The Mississippi Quarterly devoted to her life and work.

Godbold has taught at the university since 1977.
