The Great 8: Colleges and Schools honor top alumni


Eight Mississippi State alumni were honored as College and School Alumni of the Year at the Alumni Association's annual Alumni Awards Banquet in January.

The 1997 College and School Alumni of the Year are:

  o Will D. Carpenter of Chesterfield, Mo., College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Carpenter, who received his bachelor's degree in agronomy from Mississippi State in 1952, is chairman of the board of Agridyne Technologies Inc. In 1992, he retired from Monsanto as vice president and general manager of the new products division for agriculture.

  o Steven A. Corbitt of Jackson, College of Forest Resources. Corbitt, who received his bachelor's degree in forest resources from Mississippi State in 1976, is executive vice president of the Mississippi Forestry Association. He was the College of Forest Resources' Alumni Fellow for 1996.

  o Dr. Fred G. Corley Jr. of San Antonio, Texas, College of Arts and Sciences. Corley, who received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Mississippi State in 1968, is professor of orthopedics and director of the hand surgery service at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio.

  o Susan M. Daniels of Baltimore, Md., College of Education. Daniels, who received her master's degree in educational psychology from Mississippi State in 1972, is associate commissioner for the Office of Disability Programs in the Social Security Administration.

  o Farrol Dean "Bud" Hollomon Jr. of Jackson, School of Architecture. Hollomon, who received his bachelor's degree in architecture from Mississippi State in 1984, is a partner in Singleton Hollomon Architects.

  o Richard A. Linder of Baltimore, Md., College of Engineering. Linder, who received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Mississippi State in 1957, retired in 1996 as chairman of Westinghouse Electronic Systems after 40 years with the company.

  o Lewis F. Mallory Jr. of Starkville, College of Business and Industry. Mallory, who received his bachelor's degree in banking and finance from Mississippi State in 1965, is president and CEO of National Bank of Commerce of Mississippi.

  o Dr. Barbara H. Masters of Kearneysville, W.Va., College of Veterinary Medicine. Masters, who received her doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Mississippi State in 1987, works for the Food Safety and Inspection Service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
