There's an old saying in the outdoors fraternity that there are two kinds of hunters: turkey hunters and the other guys. Sometimes turkey hunters cross the line and go after deer or squirrels or ducks, but any one among them will readily admit that his essence is defined-at the faint break of day in the strangely unnatural spring woods-by the hooting of owls and the first distant gobble.
Wade S. Wineman, Jr. ('70, M.B.A. '73) of Greenville, a consummate turkey hunter for nearly four decades, has produced a chronicle of his and others' adventures in the quest of that maddening bird.
East of the Slash is, of course, about turkey hunting, but it's the human characters and the land that seem to occupy center stage throughout the book. The OK Hunting Club, founded in 1955 by the joining of several properties in the levee country along the Mississippi River, is the setting.
Wineman's narrative offers a plentiful selection of hunting stories, useful tips for hunters, and many amusing anecdotes about some of the characters who have traipsed through "the Slash." This book would be a fine addition to any sportsman's library.
