
Glenn L. Smith ('74) of Cambridge, Mass., a landscape architect, has received a prestigious Loeb Fellowship in Advanced Environmental Studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Established in 1970, the Loeb Fellowship is awarded annually to approximately 12 highly motivated professionals who will use it to benefit society at large. It allows those who have demonstrated leadership in the design and environmental professions to pursue independent study at Harvard University.
Smith is a landscape architecture consultant focusing on urban and community design. He is based in New York City. His current work includes the design of a community park in Harlem; an open-space study in Harlem; and a spring 1996 team-taught seminar at City College titled "Environmental Justice." He is working on two books related to sculptural landscapes and landscape architectural design theory.
Smith is the author of numerous articles and book reviews for professional journals and magazines, and served as landscape architect for the City College Architectural Center, a non-profit community service organization.
He is a member of the Design Review Committee for the Parks Council of New York and is president of the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
As a Loeb Fellow, he plans to investigate historical precedents related to urban open-space conversions based on cultural shifts and changing design trends.
