Ms. Johnson, who came to Mississippi State in January 1994 as assistant athletic director/women's sports and head volleyball coach, will continue to oversee nine women's sports. She was the school's first assistant AD for women's sports.

"Samye has provided excellent leadership to our women's program since coming to Mississippi State," said Director of Athletics Larry Templeton in making the announcement. "This promotion extends our commitment to the women's program at MSU."

Johnson finished her coaching career at Mississippi State with 506 wins in 20 seasons as a head coach, one of only 19 college volleyball coaches in the nation to top 500 career victories.

A native of Mendenhall, Johnson joined the Mississippi State staff after a 17-year association with the Mississippi University for Women. A 1971 graduate of MUW, she earned her master's degree from Delta State University in 1972.
