Bryan Jr. of Chicago, Ill., chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Sara Lee Corp., accepted the National Medal of Arts from President Clinton last November on behalf of Sara Lee for the corporation's dedication to preserving and ensuring public access to the arts in the United States. As a patron and collector, Bryan has amassed a significant collection of impressionistic art and is making it available to major museum collections.

Dierdre Sabine McGowan of Jackson, founder of Insight Ltd. Management Services, has received the state Professional Achievement Award from the Public Relations Association of Mississippi. In 1997, she was named one of the Top 50 Businesswomen by the Mississippi Business Journal.

John David Pennebaker of New Albany has received the first Owen Cooper Memorial Award, presented by the state's transportation industry. A former mayor of New Albany and member of the state House of Representatives 1975-92, Pennebaker was honored for helping to guide the 1987 Four-Lane Highway Program to passage while serving as chairman of the House Transportation Committee.

James H. Tumlinson (Ph.D. '69) of Gainesville, Fla., a research chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service and faculty member at the University of Florida, has been inducted into the ARS Science Hall of Fame. Tumlinson discovered the cotton boll weevil pheromone and thereby played a key part in the eradication program against the insect in the Southeastern U.S.

Alexander Hugh Thomson of Norcross, Ga., has been inducted into the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame, which consists of only 46 members. Thomson is senior professional at Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta. While playing at Mississippi State, he achieved a 54-2 SEC record and won three SEC singles titles and four doubles titles.

Mulchand S. Rathod (Ph.D. '75) of Grosse Pointe, Mich., professor and chair of the division of engineering technology at Wayne State University, has received the Ben C. Sparks Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International. The award recognizes teaching and academic leadership and contributions to ASME International.

Paul Summers of Somerville, Tenn., has been named attorney general of the State of Tennessee by the Tennessee Supreme Court. Summers most recently served as a Court of Criminal Appeals judge.
