McCallum, Baron named to GTE Academic All-America teams

The College Sports Information Directors of America has named two Mississippi State athletes to GTE Academic All-America teams.

Women's softball catcher Keri McCallum has been named to the First Team GTE Academic All-America, making the senior the first player in the history of the program to receive such honors.

Tennis standout Marco Baron is one of 45 student-athletes in the nation who have been named to the 2000 GTE Academic All-America Men's Spring At-large Team.

McCallum's award adds to an already impressive resume for the Port Orchard, Wash., native who currently holds eight career records at Mississippi State, including two set this season. She currently holds a 3.64 overall GPA in biological sciences and will graduate next year.

This season, McCallum finished second on the team with a .412 batting average to go along with 11 doubles, 11 triples, a career-high four home runs, and 25 RBI. She tallied a .597 slugging percentage, drew 13 walks, and turned in a .466 on-base percentage.

Prior to the 2000 SEC Tournament in Columbus, Ga., McCallum was named as the only unanimous selection to the All-SEC First Team. She later garnered First Team All-South Region honors, NCAA Regional I (Seattle) All-Tournament team honors, and was Mississippi State's first-ever NFCA First Team All-American.

Baron, a second-team selection to the men's at-large squad, holds a 3.84 grade point average in international business. A native of Nantes, France, he also has been a two-time Academic all-SEC selection during his MSU career.

On the court, Baron is a two-time, all-American and all-SEC selection. He has been State's No. 1 player in both singles and doubles in each of the last two seasons and is one of only four Bulldogs ever to have earned all-America status in both categories. He ended this past season ranked seventh in the country in singles, tied for 10th in doubles.

The GTE Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
