Grafton, president of the student body in 1979-80, has headed the alumni office since 1987. He previously served for seven years as an aide to former U.S. Sen. John Stennis. He and his wife, Carol, and son Stephen will make the move to Ann Arbor, Mich., in mid-summer.
"Steve has made tremendous contributions over the past seven years and has played a key role in bringing Alumni Association programs to a new level of excellence," said Dr. Billy Ward, vice president for institutional advancement. "He won't be easy to replace, but I am confident we will find the leadership needed to keep moving forward."
Association President Walter Becker Jr. ('66) said Grafton's tenure has been a time of growth and progress. "I know all Mississippi State alumni join me in thanking Steve for a job well done, and in wishing him well in his new venture," Becker said. "He leaves us with the Association on solid ground, with a very capable staff in place, and poised for even greater success."
The search for a new director is under way and the position likely will be filled this fall, Ward said. The director oversees all alumni programs and services and directs the university's office of alumni affairs, working with the association's board of directors and other volunteers to strengthen ties between Mississippi State and more than 80,000 living graduates around the world.
Qualifications sought include a bachelor's degree and at least seven years of relevant experience. Nominations may be sent to Dr. Billy Ward at P.O. Box J, Mississippi State, MS 39762.
