Bulldog duo captures NCAA tennis doubles championship

Mississippi State's Laurent Miquelard and Joc Simmons won all the marbles at the NCAA men's doubles tennis tournament held in South Bend, Ind., in May.

The two, ranked fifth going into the tournament, defeated Southern Cal's 11th ranked Wayne Black and Jon Leach 7-6, 2-6, and 6-3.

"I can't begin to say how elated I am for Laurent and Joc," said Mississippi State tennis coach Andy Jackson. "They have truly had a great tournament and a great season, and they deserve this title."

The duo put together five wins in four days to capture the national crown, which is the second-ever NCAA doubles title for Mississippi State.

The Bulldog women's team of Jackie Holden and Claire Pollard won the NCAA doubles title in 1989.

"I'm very happy about it," said Miquelard, a native of France. "I never thought that we could win the NCAA. But match after match, I believed we could do it, because Joc and I are great doubles players and we had a great year."

"We went out and played relaxed tennis in the first set," said Simmons, of Tulsa, Okla.. "The second set, we could feel victory and got a little tense. In the third, we got down a break early, and that took the pressure off. We played good tennis the rest of the way."
