Cochran delivers 1994 commencement address

Cochran
Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), speaking at spring commencement at Mississippi State, told graduates that "the dream of freedom, prosperity, and opportunity" is challenged by "an erosion of pride, self-confidence, self-reliance, and character in our society."

With about 2,400 fall and spring graduates in the just-completed school year, Mississippi State now has awarded more than 100,000 academic degrees.

Cochran reminded the audience that the chances of being a violent crime victim are now greater than of being injured in an automobile accident.

"Today in America, a crime of violence occurs every 22 seconds and each year, 25 percent of all homes are victimized by crime," he said. "I believe these problems are symptoms of a more serious national ailment -- loss of character."

Cochran said he recently joined a bipartisan effort in the Senate to help address the situation. The group of four Republicans and four Democrats is sponsoring a resolution that promotes national awareness of the problem.
