Lee recognized for landmark work in transportation engineering

Dr. Clyde E. Lee (B.S. '52, M.S. '54) of Austin, Texas, has been awarded the prestigious James Laurie Prize by the American Society of Civil Engineers at its 1993 meeting in Dallas.

Lee was cited for his “contributions to the improvement of the profession of transportation engineering, and, specifically, for his instrumental role in the development of the in-motion weighing dimensioning of highway vehicles which resulted in significantly safer and more efficient highways.”

Lee is the Nasser I. Al-Rashid Centennial Professor in Transportation Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He initiated the creation of the Center for Highway Research in 1963 and served as its director until 1980.

In 1964, he received a patent for a weigh-in-motion transducer. Recently, he authored a comprehensive American Society for Testing and Materials standard specification and test method for highway weigh-in-motion systems.

Lee earned his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley.

In 1985, he was recognized as Transportation Engineer of the Year by the Texas Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. He was the H.W. Kummer Lecturer for the ASTM and is a member of the Civil Engineering Automation Library Hall of Fame.
