What a sweet season it was for Coach Richard William's roundballers as they advanced to the round of 16 in this year's NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs knocked off Santa Clara 75-67 and Utah 78-64 in the NCAA West Regional in Boise, Idaho, to earn the right to advance to the West Region finals in Oakland. There the Bulldogs lost to No. 1 ranked and eventual national champion UCLA 86-67. Mississippi State finished the season with a 22-8 record and a share of the Southeastern Conference Western Division championship. With the team's success came individual honors as Williams was voted SEC Coach of the Year by both the Associated Press and the league coaches, and finished third in AP's national Coach of the Year voting. Sophomore center Erick Dampier was voted first-team All-SEC after leading the league in shooting (64%). His 9.7-rebounds and 2.6-blocks per game ranked second in the SEC. Junior guard Darryl Wilson was the league's top three-point scorer as well as fifth-leading scorer, and was voted to the second-team All-SEC. Wilson was named the District 3A Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
