Melvin T. Roland of Morton has received the Silver Beaver award from the Andrew Jackson Council, Boy Scouts of America. The Silver Beaver is the highest honor bestowed by B.S.A. for adult Scouter service. Roland is retired from General Motors Acceptance Corp., where he was employed for 31 years.

Kevin L. Midtbo (M.Ed. '71) has been named director of employee relations with W.R. Grace and Co. at their global headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla. He previously was with Grace's energy division in Dallas, Texas, and from 1972-74 was intramural sports director at Mississippi State.

Gail P. Hammond (M.S. '80, Ed.S. '85) of Brandon has been elected president of the Mississippi Association for Gifted Children, an organization that serves the needs of more than 23,000 students. Hammond teaches at Northwest Rankin Attendance Center.

Franklin Myers of Houston, Texas, has been named senior vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Cooper Cameron Corp. He previously was senior vice president and general counsel at Baker Hughes Inc.

Ray Harris (M.S. '77) has been awarded a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University. He is a member of the music faculty at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

The University of Nebraska Medical Center has named David F. Smith the winner of its 1995 Young Investigator award. He was selected from among 22 UNMC researchers nominated for the award. Smith, who joined the medical center's faculty in 1992, is an assistant professor of pharmacology and cell biologist.

James H. Collins of Russellville, Ark., has been promoted to professor of horticulture at Arkansas Tech University. Collins has taught in the university's Department of Agri-Business for 12 years.

Craig Gordon of Plant City, Fla., has been named aquatics head coach for the state of Florida for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games, to be held in July in New Haven, Conn. The games will feature athletes from 140 nations competing in 20 sports. Gordon also has been named Coach of the Year for Hillsborough County, Fla., as well as Florida's Southwest Region Coach of the Year.

L. Carleen Burgess of Mandeville, La., is director of aviation and travel for Entergy Services Inc. of New Orleans. Entergy's flight department has been named Flight Department of the Year for 1994 by Professional Pilot magazine. Burgess is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and has served as vice president of the Mississippi Chapter of ASCE.

Leeza M. Glisson (M.Ed. '84) of Starkville, a science teacher at Sudduth Elementary School, is one of four Mississippi teachers to be named a 1994 recipient of a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Glisson received national recognition for the honor in March, as well as a National Science Foundation grant that accompanies the honor.

Chris Leach (M.P.A. '83) has been named director of strategic planning and financial analysis for the Security Benefit Group of Companies in Topeka, Kan. Previously, he was a senior audit manager in the Columbus, Ohio, office of Deloitte and Touche.

John Wallin of Glendale, Ariz., has been promoted to major in the U.S. Air Force. He currently is serving as assistant operations officer, 56th Training Squadron, Luke AFB, and is an F-16 instructor.

David T. Blakeney has been promoted to realty officer in the Arkansas Division (Little Rock) office of the Federal Highway Administration. He previously was assigned to Region 4, Florida Division, as a realty specialist. Prior to entering the FHWA training program in 1988, Blakeney worked for the Mississippi State Highway Department.

Tim Timbs and wife, Phyllis, of Indianola are the proud parents of a daughter, Mary Madaline, born May 30, 1994. Tim is president of Indianola Pecan House Inc.

The stork landed hard at the home of Laci Mason Wallin and husband, John ('83), of Glendale, Ariz. On Jan. 31, 1995, Laci gave birth to Michael Patrick, the couple's fourth child. "Big Mike" weighed in at 11 pounds, 3 ounces.

Betty Mitchell Cossar and her husband, George, of Bogalusa, La., are the proud parents of a son, George Payne Cossar IV, born April 20, 1995.

Jerry Flowers of Winona has been named associate director of Sunburst Bank in Winona. He is owner of Flowers Accounting Service and serves on the city's Board of Aldermen.

Smith, Turner & Reeves, a Jackson certified public accounting firm, has promoted Jerry Michael Goolsby to audit manager. Goolsby joined the firm in 1991.

Mickey R. Roberts has been promoted to vice president-manager of Sunburst Bank in Winona. Roberts is a graduate of Vanderbilt University's Southeastern School of Commercial Lending. He is a director of the Montgomery County Economic Council.

Thomas E. McElroy has been named western regional sales manager for Whizard Protective Wear, a division of Bettcher Industries Inc. He will be based in the Portland, Ore., area.

Irene Dumas Tyson is now director of design services for South Carolina Downtown Development Association, headquartered in Columbia.

Roger Clifford Clapp Jr. is training in general surgery residency at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tenn. Clapp graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in May 1994.

Vanessa Spencer Diggs and husband, Chris, of Columbus, are the proud parents of a daughter, Christina Vaniece, born Oct. 25, 1994.

E. Alan and Kathy Tinney Lord of Lexington, S.C., are the proud parents of Lee Allyn, born May 31, 1994.

Jimmy Worrell of Jackson has been promoted to branch officer in his role as assistant branch manager at Deposit Guaranty National Bank's Meadowbrook branch. He is a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University.

Larkin E. Tucker III of Nashville, Tenn., has been promoted by Star Transportation to sales account manager in the middle Tennessee and central states region.

Mike Carollo Jr. of Nashville, Tenn., has joined Star Transportation as a customer service representative.

Bert Greenwalt of Jonesboro, Ark., has received the Arkansas State University award for Outstanding Professional Service. He is an assistant professor of agriculture economics in ASU's College of Agriculture.

Danny B. Moore and wife, M. Lynne Peden Moore ('86, '94), of Murfreesboro, N.C., are the proud parents of South Alexander, born Sept. 14, 1993. Danny is an assistant professor of history at Chowan College in Murfreesboro and Lynne is a math teacher at Hertford County High School.

Dana Ishee, a teacher at Sullivan Elementary School in Southaven, was the 1993-94 Sallie Mae National Award Program winner in the DeSoto County Schools. The award is given for teaching excellence to a first-year teacher.

Christie L. Lockridge and husband, Jason, of Atlanta are the proud parents of a son, Taylor Cole, born Dec. 9, 1994.

Jeffrey Levy, a post-doctoral fellow with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State, has written a report on the state's channel catfish industry to serve as a reference guide for lawmakers, opinion leaders, and persons involved or interested in the industry. During his senior year, Levy worked with federal regulatory agencies and members of the Delta-based aquaculture industry to compile the report, titled “A Profile of the Channel Catfish Industry in the State of Mississippi.” Levy distinguished himself during his college career with a number of awards, including the prestigious Dean's Pegasus Award from CVM. His special interest is agricultural public policy, and he also maintains a private veterinary practice.

David McNair is a participant in the Mississippi Teacher Corps program, an effort dedicated to providing professional instructors to some of the more educationally disadvantaged school districts throughout the state. McNair currently is teaching English in the Oktibbeha County School System. Program participants agree to devote at least two years to teaching in rural school districts.

Melinda Sneed, a second-grade teacher at Sullivan Elementary School in Southaven, has been named the Sallie Mae National Award Program winner for 1994-95 in the DeSoto County Schools. The award is given to a first-year teacher in recognition of teaching excellence.
