Coach Andy Jackson's men's tennis team won the 1996 Southeastern Conference Championships in late April, defeating Georgia 4-2 in the finals. It was Mississippi State's first title in four trips to the SEC Championship finals during the past six seasons.
"I can't describe what this feels like for us," said Jackson. "We defeated three of the nation's top 11 teams in three days. It definitely gives us some momentum and confidence heading into the NCAAs."
During the tournament, the ninth-ranked Bulldogs defeated Vanderbilt, 11th-ranked Florida, third-ranked Ole Miss, and eighth-ranked Georgia.
Mississippi State finished the 1996 season in third place in the overall SEC standings with 10 points, behind Georgia and Ole Miss who tied for the overall title with 12 points each.
