Carl E. Carver of Meridian formed Great River Insurance Co. in 1993 and serves as its president. The regional property/casualty company is a part of the W.R. Berkley Corp. of Greenwich, Conn.

Frank Nicoladis has been elected president of the Consulting Engineers Council of Louisiana. Nicoladis has served on the board of directors of CEC/L for the past five years. He is president of N-Y Associates, a consulting engineering firm, and of N-Y Architects Ltd. The firms have offices in Metairie, La., and Biloxi.

Fred W. Beaufait of Detroit, Mich., formerly dean of the College of Engineering at Wayne State University, has been named director of the Coalition for New Manufacturing Education, an organization formed in 1994 under a grant from the National Science Foundation to develop a revolutionary curriculum in engineering education.

James W. Bagley (M.S. '66), vice chairman of the board of Applied Materials, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Teradyne Inc., a leading manufacturer of automatic test equipment and connection systems for the electronics and telecommunications industries.

Mary C. Landin (M.S. '77, Ph.D. '85), a research biologist with the Environmental Laboratory at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, has received the U.S. Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service. The award was presented by the Secretary of the Army in ceremonies at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. It is the highest honor that can be awarded to a Corps of Engineers employee.

Thomas C. Hill of Vicksburg, a registered professional engineer, has been promoted to chief of the Programs Executions Division and assistant director of the Programs Management Directorate of the Lower Mississippi Valley Division-Mississippi River Commission.

Jo Huddleston of Auburn, Ala., has had two books published recently. Amen and Good Morning, God and Amen and Good Night, God (Tyndale House Publishers, 1995) are books of morning and evening prayers.

The Kappler Co., a major producer of protective apparel and fabrics in Guntersville, Ala., has moved into its new worldwide headquarters building in the Mountain Crest Industrial Park. The company, headed by president George Kappler, produces clothing to protect workers from chemicals and other harmful materials. With facilities in seven countries, Kappler employs some 1,400 people. Gov. Fob James declared Oct. 20, 1995, "Kappler USA Day" in Alabama.

Dr. Sam J. Cox III of Memphis is president of the Memphis and Shelby County Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. He has been in private medical practice in Memphis since 1978.

Tom Culotta (M.S. '72) has been named general manager of ConAgra Poultry Co.'s Natchitoches, La., complex. Culotta joined ConAgra in 1985 and most recently was vice president and general manager of Mott's Blue Coach Foods in Water Valley.

George A. Hurst of Starkville, professor in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries at Mississippi State, has received a special award from Weyerhaeuser Company for his 25 years of cooperative research in high-yield forestry and its effects on wildlife habitats and populations. Since 1986, his research has focused on wild turkey use of pine plantations. Weyerhaeuser presented the award at a banquet in Hurst's honor.

Thomas D. Cockrell (M.A. '81, Ph.D. '89), chairman of the Division of Social Science at Blue Mountain College at Ripley, has co-edited A Mississippi Rebel in the Army of Northern Virginia: The Civil War Memoirs of Private David Holt. The book is published by Louisiana State University Press.

Leonard Ray Frederick of O'Fallon, Ill., has been promoted to colonel in the U.S. Air Force and the Mississippi Air National Guard. He has been a Guard member for 29 years and currently is assigned as ANG advisor to the Director of Operations, Air Mobility Command, headquartered at Scott AFB, Ill.

Buddy Newsom of Jackson, founder and CEO of Newsom Construction Inc., has won a Southern Home Award from Southern Living magazine for his work on the Sandestin, Fla., home of alumnus Jim Rester ('62) and his wife, Martha. Newsom was one of six winners chosen from more than 250 entries in the magazine's annual awards program. The house is featured in the February 1996 issue of Southern Living.

Billy M. Teels (Ph.D. '75) of Manassas, Va., has been named director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service's new Wetland Science Institute. Teels was 1993 Alumni Fellow and 1994 Alumnus of the Year for Mississippi State's College of Forest Resources.

John G. Sigman (M.S. '73) of Jackson has been promoted to chief environmental engineer with Neel-Schaffer Inc. He also will serve as assistant manager of the company's Jackson office.

James Koerber has been promoted to senior manager for Horne CPA Group in Hattiesburg. He has been with the firm for two years.

Charles Ray Nash of Tuscaloosa, Ala., vice chancellor for academic affairs for the University of Alabama System, is serving as chairman of the Council on Academic Affairs of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. He has held his current position with the University of Alabama System since 1992.

Dancy Sykes has been promoted to senior vice president, chief financial officer, and cashier at Great Southern National Bank in Meridian.

Michael B. Ballard (M.A. '76, Ph.D. '83), Mississippi State University archivist and associate professor, has co-edited A Mississippi Rebel in the Army of Northern Virginia: The Civil War Memoirs of Private David Holt. The book is published by Louisiana State University Press.

Michael F. Hare and family have recently moved to Georgetown, Texas, where he is a toxicologist with the Pesticides Program Division of the Texas Department of Agriculture.

Casey M. and Carol Smith live in Tupelo, where Casey is associate director of the American Family Association and Carol is a special education teacher in the Tupelo Public School District.

Mark G. Livingston of Dallas, Texas, has been elected a principal of A.T. Kearney Inc., a global management consulting firm. Livingston's specialties include information technology, manufacturing operations, and business process reengineering.

Lynn M. Phillips of Starkville, president of Phillips Financial Advisory Inc. and a registered principal with Keogler, Morgan & Co., has been included in Money magazine's list of "Best Financial Planners" in the nation, and the Mississippi Economic Council has featured her in a "Spotlight on Excellence" column on financial planning.

Robert E. Neal, AIA, of Madison, director of architectural services for Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, has been appointed architectural director for the city of Ridgeland.

Bill Long of Webb, a territory manager for Agricultural Chemical Sales, has been elected president of the Mississippi Agricultural and Chemical Council. Long is national second vice president of the MSU Alumni Association.

Janet Marie Smith of Baltimore, Md., vice president of planning and development for the Atlanta Braves organization, has also been named vice president of sports and entertainment facilities for Turner Properties. She and husband Barton Harvey also are the proud parents of a second child, Nellie Grace Harvey, born March 13, 1996.

Lee A. Day of Baton Rouge, La., has been promoted to Earth Sciences Group manager for the Rust Environment & Infrastructure office in Baton Rouge.

Cedric Michael Henson of Kilmichael is a cost analyst with the Office of Comptroller and Treasurer at Mississippi State. He previously worked for Marathon Oil Co. in Findlay, Ohio.

Pattye Payne Hicks and husband Greg of Ft. Worth, Texas, are proud to announce the birth and adoption of a daughter, Leah Renee, born Dec. 18, 1995.

David R. Campbell of Columbia, S.C., has been promoted to executive vice president of operations at Chernoff/Silver and Associates, a full service advertising and public relations agency.

H. Byron Carter III and his wife, Lisa Robins Carter, recently moved to Jackson, where he is an attorney with Daniel Coker Horton & Bell, P.A.

S.C. "Steve" Eckhoff of Houston, Texas, has been named division manager of W. Canning Inc.'s Silicones Division. Also, he and wife Stacey are proud to announce the birth of a second son, Cole, born Jan. 18, 1996.

Ronnie C. Harper (M.S. '87) of Denham Springs, La., received an Ed.D. at the University of Alabama in May 1995. A nationally certified athletic trainer, he recently was named program director of the new athletic training curriculum at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

Travis B. Moore (M.S. '86) of Southaven recently was a delegate to the National League of Cities annual convention in Phoenix, Ariz. He is a member of the Southaven Board of Aldermen, treasurer of the DeSoto County Republican Party Executive Committee, and vice president of commercial loans at First Commercial Bank in Memphis.

Brian Lewis Pate of Waukesha, Wis., is director of research and development at Criticare Systems Inc. in Waukesha. The company designs, develops, and manufactures patient monitoring equipment. He and his wife, Lori Lovett Pate, ('84) are proud to announce the birth of their fourth child, Amy Elise, born July 19, 1995.

Willie Nester of Jackson is a project engineer with Power Management & Control Inc., an environmental and energy management consulting company which recently was acquired by Pickering Environmental Consultants Inc. of Memphis.

Charlotte Prince of Jackson has been promoted to vice president of corporate services for Laughlin Insurance Services. Prior to joining Laughlin in July 1995, she was director of enrollment services for Trust Management Services.

Larry Rhodes is one of only two winners of this year's prestigious Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Japanese and Far East Studies at the University of Hawaii.

Danny Whalen of Cleveland has joined the Cleveland State Bank as vice president after seven years with Sunburst Bank.

Karen Wilson Zimpfer and husband Douglas of Houston, Texas, are the proud parents of twins, Corey Alexander and Kristen Marie, born Nov. 7, 1995.

Nat Whitten has been named branch manager of Pickering Environmental Consultants Inc.'s new Jackson division, Power Management & Control Inc. Whitten has more than 10 years of experience in environmental design consulting.

Allen D. Jenkins of Gulfport, president of PowerLines Advertising and Design Inc., was named "Copywriter of the Year" at the 12th annual Mississippi Gulf Coast ADDY Awards celebration in February. The ADDYs are the American Advertising Federation's highest mark of creative excellence. Jenkins also received two ADDYs and five AAF Citations of Excellence in this year's competition. Jenkins previously was recognized as Art Director of the Year and Volunteer of the Year by the Gulf Coast Ad Club, and currently is president-elect of that organization.

Wesley Craig Reed and Ava Lacey Reed ('89) of Allen, Texas, are the proud parents of a daughter, Lacey McKinley, born Dec. 22, 1995.

Darrin M. Webb (M.S. '89) of Brandon has received a Ph.D. in applied economics at Clemson University and is a senior economist with the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning's Center for Policy Research and Planning in the Department of Economics.

David Roeder of Algonquin, Ill., has joined Heller Financial Inc. as vice president, manager of credit and operations of the company's Financial Services Group.

Robert Walker of Jackson has been promoted to project manager in the Traffic and Transportation Department of Neel-Schaffer Inc.

William L. McInnis III of Collierville, Tenn., has been promoted to senior consultant with Andersen Consulting. He married Amanda Elizabeth Robinson of Tampa, Fla., in October 1995.

Drew Murrah of Memphis, Tenn., a major accounts representative for Mid-South Systems, has received two "Top Gun of the Southeast Region" awards, presented to the Ricoh representative with the highest sales in the region.

Lance Vardaman Porter of Keene, N.H., recently was named creative services coordinator with Schleicher and Schuell Inc. Last year, he married Leslie McKenzie of Baton Rouge, La.

Scott Shuttleworth is a captain in the Air Force, serving in Hawaii with the Pacific Rescue Coordination Center as a combat rescue controller. He is combat rescue controller for all rescue forces in the Pacific Ocean area.

Stacey W. and Leann Jarzen Swafford ('89, M.Ed. '91) of Brandon are the proud parents of a son, Benjamin Lee, born March 15, 1996.

Julie P. Skinner of Starkville, administrative secretary with the Tri-State Network Demonstration Project at Mississippi State, married Donny G. Parker in December 1995. Donny is a senior at Mississippi State.
