Gift from former prof to endow scholarship

A $100,000 pledge from a former professor will endow a scholarship fund he began several years ago in memory of his father.

Dr. Robert Rundel of San Rafael, Calif., who taught physics at Mississippi State for 11 years, began supporting the Stan Rundel Memorial Scholarship in 1993 with $25,000 annual gifts. Half of his most recent five-year commitment of $100,000 has been designated to sustain the scholarships already in existence in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, with the remainder going to permanently endow the Stan Rundel Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Robert Rundel came to Mississippi State in 1980 following a stint with NASA in Houston. He rose to the rank of full professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy before leaving the university in 1991 to enter the computer software industry in California.

He also has contributed $20,000 to the department to furnish a study room for students that is now known as the Stan Rundel Reading Room.

The late Stan Rundel was an electrical engineer who established and sold several companies during his lifetime.
