Three College of Education alumnae were honored recently with Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards. Mississippi State graduates have won 10 of the 32 Milken awards given in Mississippi and one award in Ohio since 1987.
Joe Ann Clark of Brandon, Brenda McCarthy of Tupelo, and Senita Walker of Hattiesburg received their awards last fall.
Clark, gifted-education teacher at Puckett Attendance Center since 1988, received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Mississippi State in 1966. Through her leadership, Puckett students started a school newspaper, instituted a teacher appreciation day, and tutored fellow students.
McCarthy, a third- and fourth-grade teacher at Rankin Elementary School, received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Mississippi State in 1976. She played an important role in helping Rankin Elementary become the first Mississippi public elementary school to have a local area network and an Internet connection in every classroom.
Walker, a library/media specialist at Woodley Elementary School, received her master's degree in education from Mississippi State in 1971. She is one of only five teachers in the state who hold certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Other Mississippi State alumni who have received the prestigious award include Mary Davidson of Hattiesburg, Nelle Elam of Starkville, Vicki Shirley of Corinth, Philip Terrell of Pass Christian, Michael Thomas of Ackerman, Carol White of Grenada, Cynthia Wilkins of Brandon, and Nancy Varian of East Canton, Ohio.
The Milken Award recognizes outstanding elementary and secondary educators for the quality of their teaching, professional leadership, community involvement, and potential for contributions to children.
