

Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Lester Spell Jr., right, presents a Centennial Farm Award to Charles Hamer ('48) and Alice Hamer Sanford, second from left, during a recent ceremony at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Museum in Jackson. Also attending the ceremony was Alice Sanford's daughter, Penny Sanford ('83). Alice Sanford is associate professor emerita of curriculum and instruction at Mississippi State. The award is given to families who have continuously owned and operated the same farm or ranch in the state for 100 years or longer. Hamer Hills was founded by James Hamer in 1837 and is located eight miles east of Winona. The founder of the 1,425-acre farm was the great great grandfather of the current brother/sister owners.
