The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters recognized the creative accomplishments of two Mississippi State alumni at its 18th annual awards dinner in April. The dinner was held at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs.
Marion L. Brown ('50) of Yazoo City and Paul Ruffin ('64, M.A. '68) of Huntsville, Texas, were honored for photography and poetry, respectively.
Brown won for photographic work exhibited at the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum in Oklahoma City, Okla. The exhibit is titled "An Unforced Vision." Brown, who worked for 35 years as a chemical engineer with Mississippi Chemical Co., now owns and operates a photography studio in Yazoo City.
Ruffin was honored for his book of widely published poems, Circling. A Columbus native, he teaches literature at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.
The Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters was founded in 1978 and is dedicated to the recognition of the state's artists and writers through annual awards for outstanding achievements.
Six recipients were named this year in the categories of music, photography, poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual arts. Mississippi State is the only university to claim two winners as alumni.
