Waller sworn in to state Supreme Court

Jackson attorney William L. Waller Jr. ('74) was sworn in to the Supreme Court of Mississippi in ceremonies at the state Capitol Building in January. Waller had sought the post after Chief Justice Dan Lee chose not to seek re-election.

From 1977 until his investiture, Waller maintained a general law practice with his father, former Gov. William L. Waller Sr.

Waller served as municipal judge for the city of Jackson 1995-96. He has been chairman of the Lawyer Referral Service of the Mississippi State Bar (1987-89), a board member of the Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association (1979-82), and a panelist for the Mississippi Pro Bono Service.

He is a member of the American, Mississippi, and Hinds County bar associations. He also has served as a board member and chairman of the Jackson Council of Neighborhoods and is a member of the Capitol Optimist Club.

A longtime member of the Mississippi National Guard, Waller holds the rank of lieutenant colonel and is chief of staff of the 66th Troop Command. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and currently is a corresponding student of the U.S. Army War College.

Waller's election brings to two the number of Mississippi State graduates serving on the Supreme Court. Justice James L. Roberts Jr. of Pontotoc is a 1968 graduate.
