Alumnus wills home to university

A 1929 alumnus has willed his waterfront estate in the Sunshine State to Mississippi State University in memory of his late wife.

Harold C. Lucas of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., has notified the university that he is leaving his home valued at $500,000 to the university in his will. The gift will be in memory of his late wife, Claire.

The gift will be designated for the School of Forest Resources to enhance wood preservation research.

Lucas, now retired, had a long career in the wood preserving business, culminating as executive vice president and chief executive officer of American Creosote Corp. in Louisville, Ky. He was named Tree Farmer of the Year in Florida in 1992.

During his student days at Mississippi State, Lucas was editor of the student newspaper, The Reflector.
