Grants and contracts received by Mississippi State in 1992-93 reached a new high, approaching $57 million. External funding for sponsored research and public service in all university divisions was $56,919,169, an increase of 6 percent from the previous year. The outside funding included about $32.4 million for the academic division, about $13.6 million for the Cooperative Extension Service, about $1.69 million for the Forest Products Laboratory, and about $9.3 million for the Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station.
About 67 percent of the research proposals submitted by faculty last year received funding. That rate of success, which has been maintained over several years, is well above national averages. The 687 proposals submitted last year resulted in 460 awards.
While the success rate has remained stable, the number of proposals submitted and funded has increased dramatically over the past 10 years, from 213 awards in 1983-84. Faculty research also resulted last year in 17 invention disclosures, six patents pending, one patent, and five royalty agreements.
