The race was the 1993 NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Lehigh University, and Ecke toured the 5K course with a career-best time of 17:02.1. The mark netted her an 18th place finish in a classy field of 180 runners. It also earned All-American honors for the Green Bay, Wis., native, a first for the Lady Bulldog cross country program.
"She ran a great race," said track coach Al Schmidt. "We wanted her to get out fast with the lead pack, and she did that, competing with the best runners in the country."
A two-time All-SEC performer, Ecke qualified for the national competition with a ninth- place finish in the NCAA District III Meet at Greenville, S.C., earlier that month.
Prior to the NCAA Championship Meet, Ecke had put together an impressive string of 14 top-10 finishes. Last fall, she posted individual championships at the Mississippi State Invitational and the Tulane Pelican Cup.
