The university's Division of Continuing Education has received a two-year, $210,000 contract to develop enrichment programs for African-American, Native American, and Hispanic 10th graders.
Other institutions receiving funding include Washington, D.C.'s, Georgetown University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
"The division has coordinated Job Training Partnership Act programs for seven years," said Dean Robert B. Leiter. "This contract will allow us to expand our service to youth and to enhance our mission of serving the entire population of Mississippi for lifelong learning."
The program will encourage underrepresented minority and underserved high school students to select careers in science, mathematics, research, and the health professions, said Dr. Bill Smith, associate dean of continuing education and project director.
Beginning next summer, approximately 30 minority 10th-graders will come to campus for a three-week program.
Mississippi State's colleges of Agriculture and Home Economics, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine are participating.
