Carroll J. Perkins
retired professor

Dr. Carroll J. Perkins, a retired professor of forest resources at Mississippi State, died Nov. 1, 1993. He was 80.

A resident of Starkville and Bainbridge, Ga., Perkins also had been a wildlife biologist for International Paper Co. and was a former assistant director of the Louisiana Game and Fish Commission. He received a Ph.D. in botany at Mississippi State in 1973, and held bachelor's and master's degrees from Louisiana State University.

He belonged to many professional wildlife organizations and published articles in numerous research publications. He received the Clarence Watson Award as the top-ranking wildlife biologist in the Southeast.

Perkins was a World War II Marine Corps veteran. His record for the largest Kentucky smallmouth bass ever caught in Louisiana still stands.

Charles David Saunders ('42)--73, Greenwood, president of Saunders Investments Inc. and World War II veteran, Aug. 28, 1993. Saunders was a past president of the Mississippi State Alumni Association and a member of the 1941 Orange Bowl team. While in high school, he established the world record for downstream canoeing by navigating the 2,300 miles of the Mississippi River, a record that stood for 42 years in the Guinness Book of World Records.
