University to head U.S. study of alcohol and drug use

Mississippi State University is taking a leadership role in a national study that looks at how social climate on college campuses supports or inhibits use of alcohol and other drugs.

The project will analyze 20,000 responses from college students nationwide to a survey that determines attitudes about alcohol and drug use. Resulting data will be used to help improve drug and alcohol prevention programs on college campuses.

The university's Center for Alcohol and Drug Education is receiving more than $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education for the first year of the two-year grant. The university is providing $19,000 in supplemental funds.

Mississippi State's Center for Alcohol and Drug Education was established two years ago with support from the U.S. Department of Education. It has allowed the university to coordinate and expand alcohol and drug education efforts.

The center annually sponsors such activities as a "Safe Spring Break" program in which student pledge not to drink and drive; a "Pass the Buck" program, which pays students $1 if they can correctly answer questions from information the center has publicized; Alcohol Awareness Week; a resource center for students who wish to do presentations about alcohol or drugs; and a booth at the university's annual Wellness Fair.

The center sponsors class presentations for university professors who must be away from class or who are planning lectures related to alcohol or other drugs.
