Disaster-Resistant University Program
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Disaster Resistant University?
In 2002, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) initiated the Disaster Resistant University program. To obtain the designation of a Disaster Resistant University, MSU must develop a hazard mitigation plan and have it approved by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and FEMA. Upon approval, MSU will qualify for pre-disaster financial assistance to help initiate the mitigation actions described in the plan.
What is a Hazard Mitigation Plan?
It identifies the most probable natural, man-made, and technological hazards, estimates the potential monetary losses that MSU could incur due to these hazards, and proposes mitigation actions that could begin the process of reducing MSU's vulnerability.
