Fall of Berlin Wall commemoration to be held

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the historic fall of the Berlin Wall, a lecture and panel discussion will be held in Mitchell Memorial Library's John Grisham Room Nov. 9.

"Remembering the Fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989- 2009," beginning at 4:30 p.m., will feature MSU professors Stephen Brain, Jeff Cavanaugh, Alexandra Hui, Dagmar Radin, and Rick Travis. They will discuss and analyze the history of the Berlin Wall, the reasons it fell and that event's significance on today's international environment.

The event is sponsored by MSU Libraries, the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Department of History, and the Judy and Bobby Shackouls Honors College.

Accompanying the lectures and discussion will be a display featuring a piece of the Berlin Wall donated to Mississippi State as a part of the Gilbert E. Carmichael Papers. In addition, MSU Libraries' Government Documents, Microforms, and Current Journals Department is hosting a semester-long Berlin Wall display featuring books, pamphlets and posters from the German Missions in the United States' "Freedom Without Walls" campaign to promote awareness among current college students. A research guide created by MSU Libraries faculty members Jason D. Phillips and Christine Fletcher features resources available via the libraries, as well as quality information from the Internet.
