Successful test of power generation capabilities
The May 19 power outage that impacted most of the Starkville campus of Mississippi State provided a highly successful test of the "black start" capabilities at the university's power generation plant. Much of the planning and successful operation of the "black start" test were credited to MSU vice president for campus operations Amy Tuck, MSU mechanical and energy engineer J.D. Hardy, MSU generation plant supervisor Lee Collins, MSU electrical supervisor Dwight Dempsey, MSU vehicles and equipment manager Ricky Brock, and MSU associate director of facilities management George Davis.
Edwards-Henry premiers 'Travelin' Music'
Jackie Edwards-Henry, professor of piano and piano pedagogy at Mississippi State University, premiered the harpsichord suite "Travelin' Music" at the convention of the American Musical Instrument Society and the Historical Keyboard Society of North America June 1. "Each movement presents ideas related to music and travel -- sometimes in a general sense and, at other times, in settings that present more programmatic intentions," said the solo and collaborative pianist who has performed in Canada, Europe and the U.S.
Publication highlights Grant presidential library
A special online feature of a new national Civil War print publication currently features an interview with the head of the Mississippi State University-based Ulysses S. Grant Association and Grant Presidential Library. Internationally recognized Civil War historian John F. Marszalek is the focus of a nearly 15-minute production by Civil War Monitor magazine's "Behind the Lines" video interview series. In late 2008, the Grant collection relocated to MSU from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
Volunteers needed at Christian Women's Job Corps
The Maroon Volunteer Center at Mississippi State details a number of volunteer opportunities for the campus community in its current newsletter, including Father's Child Ministry, computer training with Christian Women's Job Corps, Muscular Dystrophy Camp, Emerson's Fresh Start Program, and more.
Art faculty exhibition open through the month
A collection presented in a variety of mediums by members of the Mississippi State art department faculty will be featured on campus through the month of June. The showcase at the university's Cullis Wade Depot Gallery will include samples of paintings, ceramics, sculptures, drawings, photography and printmaking. The gallery is located on the second floor of the MSU Welcome Center, located adjacent to the Barnes & Noble at Mississippi State Bookstore.
