STARKVILLE, Miss.-While never easy, job searching in a slumping economy and tight job market can be intimidating.
A very competitive job market can be a source of anxiety when entering or re-entering the job market. Nevertheless, there are some basic steps that can help maximize chances for success, says Cassandra Latimer, associate director of Mississippi State University's Career Center.
To set themselves apart from the competition, Latimer recommends that job searchers:
- Update the resume to make certain all information is current, accurate and reflective of the type of position being sought. If changing careers, craft it to reflect qualities most desired by the potential employer.
- Use several job-search methods, since print and online classified ads may represent only about 20 percent of available postings. Networking is critical and available to anyone, whether contacts are existing (friends, family, current and former colleagues, etc.) or new (professional organization members and Web-based networks, among others). Collegiate career centers may be in either category since they typically offer services for alumni.
- Remember the "follow-up," even if there's seemingly little feedback from employers. Done the right way, this critical step can demonstrate initiative, drive and a desire to succeed.
- Consider alternatives when more traditional efforts seem unproductive. Some examples: employment agencies to help "get your foot in the company door," part-time employment to help pay bills while building networks and enrollment in training or certification programs to build new skills.
