The daily demands of modern society tend to reduce the time families have to create and maintain healthy connections, and that's not good.
Carl J. Sheperis of Mississippi State University says it's important for families to have an action plan that is both practical and affordable for developing a sense of togetherness. The associate professor of counselor education offers a few tips that may be implemented into daily routines without breaking the bank:
- Create rituals. While sit-down meals may prove challenging for busy family schedules, plan to make time—even if it's just once weekly—to discuss the highs and lows in each person's life.
- Be positive. By working to make at least five positive statements for every negative one, a family can create a home atmosphere that improves the way each member interacts with the group.
- Schedule family time. Whether a board game, neighborhood walk or other leisure activity, make certain everyone is aware of the schedule. This also can include such events as a daughter's dance classes or a son's sporting events, among others.
- Keep connected. With everyone on the go, it is important for families to keep in touch during the day. Whether by phone or text message, take time to let each family member know that you are thinking of them and love them.
