STARKVILLE, Miss.-Dealing with the realities of lean economic times can take much of the fun out of Valentine's Day, but only if we let it.
Karen Benson, a child and family development specialist, says there are any number of ways loving couples can maintain the romantic spark without breaking the bank on costly traditional staples usually associated with the special day.
"Many people today are watching their budgets, so this can be the perfect opportunity to create a romantic Valentine's experience with a personal touch," the MSU Extension Service agent adds.
Among some budget-friendly suggestions she offers:
- A home-cooked dinner at home by candlelight.
- "Love notes" or, better yet, letters telling the significant other why he or she is special.
- Spa treatments at home, including massages, candles and aroma therapies.
- Hand-in-hand strolls, weather permitting, in a park, on a beach or under the stars; it's the time alone together that really matters.
- Laughter and lighthearted conversation to let go of worries and concerns and begin the reconnection process. (Also, research studies suggest laughter can be an aphrodisiac.)
