Swimming and boating are popular ways to beat the brutal Mississippi heat.
Whether cooling off in the pool or skiing and tubing at the nearest lake, a day on the water can provide a fun and relaxing time for the entire family. Sadly, that fun quickly can turn to tragedy when swimmers and boaters disregard the accompanying dangers of aquatic recreation, says Brent Crocker of Mississippi State.
"Swimming and boating can be fun and dangerous at the same time," reminds the aquatics coordinator for recreational sports at the university's Joe Frank Sanderson Center. "By following a few simple guidelines when on the water, you can ensure a fun and safe trip for everyone."
They include:
- Enrolling in a class if you can't swim; it's never too late to learn.
- Always following posted pool or lake rules. Speak with a lifeguard or facility supervisor if you have questions.
- Always supervising children; no lifeguard can substitute for parental surveillance.
- Never swimming in unfamiliar or dangerous waters.
- Knowing in advance how to contact help and the location of safety equipment.
- Never swimming or boating while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- When flotation devices are required, always using U.S. Coast Guard-approved equipment.
