'Empress of Soul' Gladys Knight to play MSU Riley Center in January

Gladys Knight

Gladys Knight, the Empress of Soul, will bring her legendary voice and her impressive catalog of beloved songs to the MSU Riley Center in downtown Meridian on on Jan. 16, 2018, at 7:30 p.m.

Listing her among the 100 greatest singers of all time, Rolling Stone magazine said she combines “precise classic-pop elegance with pure soul power.” She has won seven Grammy Awards and in 1996 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In the 1960s and ’70s, she and the Pips, her now-retired trio of backing singers and dancers, created a long string of electrifying hits. They included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye),” “You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me,” and her signature song, “Midnight Train to Georgia.”

While Knight has branched out into acting in television and films over the years, she has continued recording and performing music. Said one reviewer after a recent concert, “As incredibly memorable as her records are, there’s simply no substitute for hearing her songs in a live setting.”

Tickets are $80 and $74 at the MSU Riley Center Box Office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online at www.msurileycenter.com or by calling the box office at (601) 696.2200.
