STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State sophomore from Brandon is this year's winner in the piano solo division of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association competition.

Sarah E. Jenkins is a music major concentrating in piano and a President's List scholar at the university. She is the daughter of Lisa Jenkins and Billy Jenkins.

MMTA's 2015 competition was held at the University of Southern Mississippi. The category in which Jenkins competed is open to college freshman and sophomores across the state.

Since its establishment in 1955, the association has worked to encourage musical growth and professional development by supporting teachers and students with their musical performances, composition and research. For more, visit www.msmusicteachers.org.

Professor Rosângela Sebba, who chairs MSU's piano program, said she and her music department colleagues are especially proud of Jenkins "because this is the first competition that she entered, and she won first place.

"She represented MSU really well," Sebba said, adding that the department's faculty has helped develop numerous other winners over the years.
