STARKVILLE, Miss.--An internationally recognized visual communication authority with more than three decades of professional comic-making experience will speak March 31 at Mississippi State.
Scott McCloud's presentation, "Comics and the Art of Visual Communication," is part of the university's 2014-15 Institute for the Humanities Distinguished Lecture Series. Free to all, the program begins at 3:30 p.m. in McCool Hall's Taylor Auditorium.

"Connecting popular art with the craft of storytelling, McCloud's talk presents members of the campus and surrounding communities with a tremendous opportunity to interact with a leading art critic and cartoonist whose new book has received strong reviews from the New York Times and other major publications," said institute director William Anthony Hay.
A fine arts/illustration graduate of Syracuse University now residing in Newbury Park, California, McCloud became widely known through his popular non-fiction books "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art" (1993), "Reinventing Comics: How Imagination and Technology Are Revolutionizing an Art Form" (2000) and "Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels" (2006), as well as the fiction comic series "Zot!" (1984-1991), among other works.
Over the past two decades, he has spoken at more than 250 national and international events. Among the venues were Harvard University, the Google corporation and Pixar studios, and the federal government's high-technology Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Established by MSU's College of Arts and Sciences in 2005, the lecture series regularly brings prominent artists, critics and art historians, among others, to campus for the benefit of students, faculty and interested members of the general public.
