Starkville-MSU Symphony Assn. announces 2015-16 concert season

STARKVILLE, Miss.—The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association’s 2015-16 season begins next week with a concert at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus.

Titled “String Symposium,” the free Friday [Sept. 18] performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Rent Auditorium. 

The group is directed by MSU music professor Michael Brown.

Celebrating its 47th performance season, the association has scheduled seven other free concerts during the school year, all in the Bettersworth Auditorium of MSU’s historic Lee Hall unless otherwise noted. They include:

—Oct. 13, 6 p.m., “Jazz at Renasant,” Starkville’s Renasant Bank Plaza at the intersection of South Montgomery and East Lampkin streets.

—Nov. 6, 7:30 p.m., “Children’s Concerts.”

—Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m., “Vivaldi Gloria” featuring the MSU Philharmonia student orchestra, MSU’s McComas Hall main auditorium.

—Dec. 1, 7:30 p.m., “Criss Christmas Concert.”

—Feb. 27, 7:30 p.m., “Faure’s Finest” featuring MSU and MUW choirs.

—March 18, 7:30 p.m., “The Best of the B’s.”

—April 24, 2:30 p.m., “Light and Live,” Starkville First United Methodist Church.

Founded March 2, 1969 in the home of Starkville residents David and Barbara Cornell, the symphony association is a non-profit volunteer organization whose members work to educate, enlighten and share classical music with the city, university campus and other communities in the Golden Triangle region. Producing high-quality musical events and increasing awareness for the arts are its primary missions.

In addition to Mississippi State, major SSA contributors include the J.W. Criss Foundation, Mississippi Arts Commission, National Endowment for the Arts, Renasant Bank, City of Starkville, Starkville Convention and Visitors Bureau, along with Columbus’ Gildea Foundation.
