About this event

Developing research funding from DoD basic science agencies can be significantly different than with other basic science agencies, such as the NSF or NIH. Dr. John Schmisseur, the H.H. Arnold Chair at the University of Tennessee Space Institute, will share his perspective from more than 13 years of managing multiple research portfolios capped with two years of concurrently serving as the division chief (department chair) for energy, power and propulsion sciences from 2001-2014 within the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

Topics to be discussed include understanding the difference between expectations for basic and applied research (including a brief review of technology readiness levels and how they translate to DoD resource allocation); recommendations for engagement of program officers and starting the research menu/white paper process; and how to be a good principal investigator once you have been funded by a DoD program.
