Members of the campus and local communities gathered Wednesday [Jan. 20] in front of Mississippi State's Y.M.C.A. Building for an evening candlelight ceremony honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Sponsored by the campus Black Student Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Holmes Cultural Diversity Center, the event included a reading of King's "I Have a Dream" speech and spiritual songs. Other activities held this week in celebration of the Baptist minister, humanitarian and civil rights activist included MSU's 22nd annual MLK Jr. Day Unity Breakfast at The Mill at MSU Conference Center. The unity breakfast also was part of a day of service in Starkville and Oktibbeha County coordinated by Volunteer Starkville and the university's Maroon Volunteer Center.
