A Brandon sophomore at Mississippi State is the university's 2000 Dow Emerging Scholar in Engineering.

Christopher L. Walker, a chemical engineering major, is one of only 12 students nationwide selected for the $5,000 per year scholarship awarded by the Dow Chemical Co. of Midland, Mich.

Now in its second year, the Emerging Scholars Program was established to provide support and work experience for a diverse group of students in order to increase enrollment in the sciences and engineering.

Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Walker and a 1998 Brandon High School graduate, was the 1996-97 Mississippi Vocational Student of the Year. At BHS, he was a National Achievement Finalist and recipient of the chemistry award.

At Mississippi State, he is a President's Scholar, College of Engineering Ambassador and parliamentarian of the Black Student Alliance.
