While "Mother Goose," "Tarzan" and slam poet Steve Colman may seem to have little in common, each, at least, can lay claim to appearing during April at Mississippi State University's Colvard Union.
Sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, all three may be seen free of charge.
Renowned storyteller Mother Goose, whose local embodiment is Columbus actress Edwina Williams, will help launch "A Day at the Union" on the 12th. In addition to children's stories, Williams's 4-5 p.m. program will include puppet and musical performances.
Following her performance at 5:30 will be the animated movie of Edgar Rice Burroughs' legendary jungle guy. "Tarzan" will swing in the third-floor small auditorium.
On April 18, Colman makes his first visit to campus for a 7:30 p.m. performance, also in the small auditorium. His appearance coincides with the union's recognition of National Poetry Month.
Currently editing an anthology and compact disc of his urban, hip-hop verse, Colman is an award winning writer, spoken-word performer and social activist. Last year, he received the "Fresh Poet Award" of New York City's Nuyorican Poets Café and was runner-up in the Nuyorican Grand Slam Finals.
He appears regularly on educational television and has been profiled on Cable News Network and Black Entertainment Television.
